The best way to prevent cockroaches is to eliminate every reason they want to enter your home. Amazon; Rachel Mendelsohn/

You probably know that jarring moment when you hear a soft thud on the floor and look up to see a loud, dark scream coming from your living room or kitchen. Not having an insect infestation is a particularly fun experience, but cockroaches take things to a whole new level.

According to Scott Hodges, vice president of technical services for Arrow Exterminators, cockroaches fall into two categories: residential or seasonal.

What Causes Roaches (and Makes Them Go Away)

Because of this distinction, Hodges likes to classify the arrival of peridomestic cockroaches as an infestation or infestation.

Hodges says that identifying the different types of cockroaches and whether they are native or peridomestic will help you understand how and why the cockroaches may have entered your home and what methods to try first.

Hodges says there is no single silver bullet approach that will completely eliminate cockroaches from your home, but rather several ways to deal with the problem. These methods help reduce minor interference. If there is a bigger problem, an exterminator should be called.

Everything You Need To Know About Palmetto Bugs

According to Amy Cross, project coordinator for the National Pesticide Information Center, the first line of control against cockroaches is “to defeat them by using the biology of the pest.” In other words, eliminate any reason for them to enter the house.

Food: Cockroaches need food to survive, and if you have it in your home, they will try to stay there. Sweep or vacuum all crumbs from the floor, tables and counters. Do not leave food unsealed in the pantry. Store food in an open pantry in airtight containers to prevent pests from accessing it. Cockroaches also eat things we don’t think of as food, like hair, soap, and toothpaste. Try to keep the house clean and remove any objects that cockroaches can feast on.

Leaks: Water is another source that supports cockroach life in your home. If you have leaky pipes or areas where water pools or drips, such as under the sink or in the basement, cockroaches can congregate there. Fix all leaky pipes and replace leaky faucets to keep cockroaches at bay. Repair other areas of your home where water can enter, such as a leaky window or roof. If the basement is wet, try using a dehumidifier or pump.

Hiding Places: Cockroaches often hide in dark places during the day. Cardboard boxes, newspapers, and other piles of trash can be great hiding places for cockroaches. Disassemble and recycle boxes instead of creating a potential cockroach haven in your home.

Types Of Cockroaches

Access points: close as many access points as possible. This may include installing a door sweep to cover the gap between the bottom of the door and the ground, or sealing holes in the home’s foundation.

Outdoor leaves: Hodge also says to keep gutters and grounds clear of vegetation when landscaping by removing leaves hanging over the house and not adding mulch when not needed.

Sticky strips are sheets or tubes coated with a sticky substance and can trap cockroaches quickly within 24 or 48 hours. While they don’t work for large infestations, they can help track the severity of cockroach conditions and indicate the severity of the problem, Hodges says.

Important! If the adhesive strips trap cockroaches, the infestation is high and you should call a professional exterminator.

So, Does Irish Spring Soap Repel Roaches?

Boric acid is a stomach poison that cockroaches cannot resist. For cockroaches to work, boric acid must be consumed.

However, as Cross and Hodges point out, there are some caveats to this. First, Hodges explains, it’s a slow-acting product and takes a while to actually kill cockroaches. Also, Hodges notes that people often panic and buy more than they should.

“The rule of thumb when using dust insecticides is, if you see it, you’ve used too much,” says Hodges. “When cockroaches see that big old pile of [boric acid], they just keep walking.”

To attract cockroaches to boric acid, mix it with equal parts sugar and water. Put the mixture in an open jar and place it where you see the cockroaches. Once the cockroaches have consumed the mixture, they will eventually die.

Hodges also urges people to be careful because boric acid can be toxic in high doses, according to the National Pesticide Information Center, and to be sure to follow label directions when applying.

Diatomaceous earth acts as a crumb or abrasive, designed to spread over the surface that the insects will then work on. Diatomaceous earth then damages or adheres to the exoskeleton, causing it to dry out.

Like boric acid, this option works slowly and people often overuse it or use it incorrectly.

Overuse can sometimes cause itchiness or sore throats in homeowners, Hodges says, and Cross also notes that overuse can render diatomaceous earth ineffective because cockroaches see it and simply crawl away.

What Causes Cockroaches

Important: Cross does not recommend the use of balls or atomizers. Fog does not penetrate the small cracks and crevices where cockroaches often hide. In addition, some cockroach species are becoming resistant to the insecticides found in many cockroach sprays, such as pyrethroids.

To feed cockroaches, mix baking soda and sugar. When they eat baking soda and drink water, their insides swell, expand, and kill them.

A 2013 study found that pellets made of three parts boric acid and one part baking soda were effective in killing cockroaches an average of 5 hours after ingestion.

You can make a spray of at least 2.5% essential oil mixed with water and then spray it on areas where roaches may pass or where you see them.

Roaches In The House: Where They Come From, And How To Get Rid Of Them

If you have pet cockroaches, such as German cockroaches, or if you suspect cockroaches are breeding in your home, purchase an insect repellent such as pyriproxyfen spray. These products target cockroaches in their egg and nymphal stages, so they often do not reproduce or mature, reducing the population.

Insect growth regulators are best used in conjunction with products that kill adult cockroaches, as they often do not work on fully grown cockroaches and may take several months to have a noticeable effect.

Products that feed cockroaches with a gel applied with a syringe make it easier to cover various hard-to-reach places. If you cover more surfaces, the chances of cockroaches encountering food also increase.

Experts recommend applying the gel in small spots to places where cockroaches can feed, enter and exit, such as corners, under cabinets, near cracks and edges. It is better to use small dots in many places than large globes in only a few areas.

Baits can kill cockroaches for one to three days, so they can infect other cockroaches.

If you see crying, jump on it. This will give you one less cry to worry about at home.

After stepping on a cockroach, disinfect the area with an antibacterial cleaner to avoid spreading the germs the cockroach carries.

Quick Tip: If you’re worried that when you step on a cockroach, all the eggs it’s carrying will make your cockroach problem worse, fear not. According to Hodges, if the cockroaches are killed, all the egg capsules are killed with them.
