Fastest Way To Get Rid Of Weeds – One of my least favorite parts of gardening is weeds. New herbicides appear on my lawn and garden every day, but I avoid spraying commercial herbicides. I want my baby and dog to be able to play on the lawn without worrying about toxic chemicals. And we definitely don’t want them next to the vegetables we plan to eat. Luckily, there are many ways to get rid of weeds naturally. Here are my favourites!
Not only are strong chemical herbicides potentially dangerous for children and pets playing outdoors, they can also cause water pollution. When it rains, these chemicals can be washed away, contaminating sewers and groundwater.

First, soften the soil by watering, then remove the weeds. I like using this hydraulic weeder on dandelions and other long rooted weeds. It attaches to a hose and releases a small stream of water directly into the soil, loosening it up to the roots. You can also use a butter knife or screwdriver to poke holes in the soil near the roots to remove dirt below the surface.
To compost, let the weeds dry out in the sun before tossing them in the compost bin. If you’re interested in making your own, there’s a free plan to make a super sturdy and easy-to-open DIY compost bin.
The heat of boiling water will dry out the weeds. This is especially useful for weeds growing in crevices in sidewalks and driveways. You can also use leftover water from boiled pasta or potatoes, or boil a new kettle. If you pour boiling water over the leaves and stems of weeds, the heat will kill them. When the weeds are dry and yellow, pull them out and remove them.
Salt is very effective at killing weeds, but it can also kill other plants, so be careful. Do not use salt to kill weeds in your lawn or garden bed. But salt is the best solution for weeds along the edge of the lawn and cracks in sidewalks and driveways. Salt can corrode concrete, so use it sparingly.

The best way to apply salt as a herbicide is to mix 1 part salt and 6 parts warm water. Stir until the salt dissolves, pour the mixture into a spray bottle, and spray directly onto the leaves and stems of the weeds you want to remove. You can also add a few drops of liquid dish soap to help the mixture adhere to the plant leaves. When the weeds turn yellow and die, they can be easily pulled out.
The acetic acid in vinegar makes it an effective herbicide. Commercial vinegar usually contains 5% acetic acid and is strong enough for most weeds. To help the vinegar stick to your plants, put a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle and spray it on the leaves and stems of the weeds you want to remove.
At most garden stores, you can find strong vinegar options with 20% or 30% acetic acid. Always wear gloves and a respirator when using the stronger version.
Alcohol is a good herbicide because it dries out unwanted plants. You can use rubbing alcohol or cheap vodka for this. Any will work. Add 2 ounces of rubbing alcohol to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of dish soap to help the mixture stick to the plant, and spray the leaves and stems of the weed.

A healthy lawn or garden will fight weeds for moisture and nutrients in the soil, allowing the strongest plants to survive. Keeping your lawn moist and healthy will prevent weeds from growing on your lawn. And plant your garden with flowers and garden plants that naturally fight and outgrow garden weeds.
Cover the weeds with newspaper or mulch to cover the weeds. Weeds, like other plants, need sunlight to grow, but this prevents them from receiving light. This method is suitable for low-growing weeds. tall stems (

There is some debate as to whether borax is actually “toxic” and it really depends on the definition of “toxic”. I don’t use borax in my borax-free homemade laundry detergent recipes, but I use it outside and in my garden to get rid of ants. Totally personal preference anyway, but a very effective herbicide.
This method involves adding 10 ounces of borax to 2.5 gallons of water and mixing it into a spray bottle. You can also add a few drops of dish soap to help the mixture adhere to the plants. Spray the leaves and stems, but be careful not to get the mixture on the ground or yourself.
