Heartgard Plus contains ivermectin, a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic medicine used to prevent heartworms. Heartgard Plus also contains Pyrantel Pamoate, an anthelmintic used to control worms and hookworms.
Heartgard (Ivermectin) is given once a month year-round to prevent heartworm disease. The usual dose of ivermectin for dogs up to 25 lbs is 68 mcg – 1 tablet in the blue pack, for 26-50 lbs 136 mcg – 1 tablet in the green pack and for 51-100 lbs 272 mcg – 1 tablet in the brown pack for dogs over 100 lbs they are given a combination tablet.

This medicine should not be used in animals that are allergic to it. Heartworm testing should be done before starting preventive therapy. If the animal has not had ivermectin for 6 months or less, start the drug and test after 6 months, because microfilariae, which take 6 months to mature, can give a positive test result.
Side effects of ivermectin are very rare at recommended doses. Heartgard tablets have a wide margin of safety for all sizes and breeds of dogs. It is approved for use in puppies less than 6 weeks of age, in small dogs regardless of weight, for use in pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs and Collies.
