Not only are fleas a nuisance, but they can also carry pathogens that are harmful to humans and pets. Here are some of them:
This disease can be serious and life changing. It goes without saying that you don’t want mites in your home, whether it’s your pets or you. This is why I always use natural flea and tick repellent for dogs when we go camping.
I try to avoid chemical flea and tick medications due to their potentially toxic ingredients. I don’t like wearing it on my dogs, especially when my kids love to snuggle with our animals.

Did you know that rose geranium can be used to repel fleas on humans, including children? Read more about it here.
Research shows that geranium oil (especially the geranium plant) is as effective as DEET at repelling ticks.
The Best Ways To Protect Your Dog From Tick Bites
The Latin or scientific name is important here – it’s geranium. Some essential oils are labeled rose geranium, while others are labeled only geranium. This is the key to Latin names.
I have not used other brands and cannot confirm their effectiveness. I’ve heard some people have mixed reviews about the NOW brand.
The last two years have been pretty bad for fleas. The situation is worse than ever due to a milder winter and is expected to be worse this year (I don’t think it’s likely). entertainment time! (No!)
I figured out another way to use essential oils as my dog’s natural flea remedy. Homemade flea spray with geranium and cedarwood essential oils. (Scroll down for the easy recipe.)
Ways To Keep Ticks Away Naturally
I’ve used 1-2 drops of geranium oil directly on my dog’s back between the shoulder blades (as suggested by chemical repellants) with great results. My vet approved this too.
But as I learned more about essential oils and became certified as an essential oil trainer (regardless of any essential oil company), I took a different approach for two reasons:

If you have a cat, you can spray on the dog, but do not spray on or near the cat.
#2 Please consult your veterinarian (preferably a holistic veterinarian as they are more familiar with natural methods including essential oils) and do your own research before using this or any essential oil on your pet. And always use common sense. Remember, essential oils are very powerful!
Note: I chose not to use coconut oil or other emulsifiers in this recipe because I didn’t want to deal with oily messes on my dog’s coat. Before each use, you will need to shake this pest spray well to mix the essential oils.

In many parts of the country, ticks are protected from disease. It’s a serious problem, serious enough to convince some people to spray their lawns with insecticide and chemically treat their coats. However, many people oppose the introduction of synthetic chemicals into the environment, even to control very dangerous pests.
Over the past two decades or so, this conundrum has prompted researchers around the world to seek natural ways to keep ticks off property and people, with little success.

In the words of the Chinese philosopher and military strategist Sun Tzu, one must “know oneself and know the enemy” before going to war. This is especially important when dealing with fleas, which have important habits and weaknesses to exploit.
The two most common ticks in the United States, the American dog tick and the black-legged tick, seek out, or “find,” hosts by perching on plants and waiting for them to pass by. They then grab fur, hair, or animal (or human) clothing with their front legs and climb onto the boat.
“It’s what we call an ambush strategist,” said Kirby Stafford, chief scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and state entomologist.
Ticks also use plants as protection from sunlight, which dries them out. Black-legged ticks are particularly vulnerable to drought, Stafford said.
This Is What To Do When You Find Ticks In The House
So simply mowing your lawn can reduce the number of mites you see on your property. Short grass does not provide enough cover for some pests to survive. Leaf sweeping, shrub pruning, and tree pruning can also help reduce the number of certain pests in your yard.
“In a recent study, we found that defoliation is very important for the survival of black-legged ticks,” said Chuck Lubelchik, a field biologist in the Lyme and Vector-Borne Diseases Laboratory at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Lubelchik) said. “Cleaning up fallen leaves from your lawn and letting them dry can make them less friendly to black-legged ticks.”
“The whole concept is to reduce the suitability of the immediate habitat around the house for ticks,” Stafford said. “You’re not going to kill them all, but you’re going to reduce their numbers.”
In a study at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, approximately 67 percent of mite samples were found in heavily wooded areas, 22 percent in unmanaged transitional habitats at the edges of forests and open spaces, and 9 percent in ornamental plants, 2% are found in forests. Found in grass. Then, on lawns, most ticks (82 percent) were located within three yards of the lawn, especially along woods, stone walls and ornamental plants. The study also showed that shaded grassy areas had more mites.

With these numbers in mind, another common pest control practice is to install 3-foot-wide gravel or rubber mulch barriers between grass and woods and around swing sets and seating areas. This sun-exposed barrier prevents mites from migrating.
Unfortunately, according to the TickEncounter Resource Center at the University of Rhode Island, some species of ticks, such as solitary ticks, can tolerate dry conditions and so may not be easily deterred by a lack of shelter. Furthermore, solitary starflies actively hunt down their hosts by responding to carbon dioxide and movement.
“These ticks are very aggressive and require more hunting strategies,” Stafford said, adding that more research is being done on how to deal with these dangerous ticks.
