How To Get Rid Of Chicken Mites On Humans – Chicken lice are an unfortunate fact of life in poultry farming. No matter how clean you keep the coop and how meticulously you care for your birds, sooner or later, lice will strike.
Lice often find their way to your chickens through wild birds in the area. Like many common chicken pests, once they set up shop, they stick around unless you try to eradicate them.
How To Get Rid Of Chicken Mites On Humans
Through trial and error, we came up with this natural chicken lice treatment that really works and is super cheap to boot!
Lice And Mites Identification And Treatment
First, we need to find out if your chickens really have lice. Fortunately, lice are easy to identify and positive.
Unlike other pests that plague backyard flocks, where northern poultry mites are difficult to see with the naked eye and hide in the cage, bird lice live directly on the bird and are quite too big to see without help. Poultry lice feed on your chickens at all hours of the day, live their entire lives directly with the poultry, and breed with your poor chickens.
It’s good to know that chicken lice are different from human head lice, although they behave similarly. You won’t get lice from handling your chickens, but if you have a heavy infestation of lice, they may crawl onto your hands as you handle the flock.
Look for lice in the vent area and under the wings of your chickens. It is advisable to check the entire flock for lice every few months so that you can get rid of them before the lice attack.
Common Poultry Parasites Of Backyard Hens
Lice are straw-colored flat insects that look a bit like sesame seeds. If your chickens have them, you will see them flee as soon as you part the feathers around the vent area of each bird.
You may not see actual lice, but nests, which are clusters of lice eggs on feathers. They appear as white or gray bumps around the base of the bird’s feathers.
You may see a few lice and nits, or if you have a heavy infestation, you may see tons. In any case, you should immediately start treating the entire flock to get rid of this harmful pest.
You still want to take steps to prevent lice and other common outdoor pests from becoming a problem. A good way to do this is to set up a simple dust bath to use on your birds. Dust is a natural deterrent that your birds use to ward off pests!
Preventing Red Mite!
How you treat chicken lice is entirely up to you, but we turn to natural remedies as much as possible for a few reasons. We have found this natural method to be an effective lice treatment and does not contribute to any negative health problems for the fur or you.
Pesticides are not good for the health of your flock, they contain all sorts of toxins that won’t kill your birds outright, but they certainly won’t lead to good health.
Whenever you treat your flock for pests, you come into direct contact with the materials you use. Pesticides are not good for your herd or your health.
If you treat your chickens with chemical pesticides, you will need to refrain from eating their eggs for several weeks to prevent the pesticides from contaminating your food. However, if you choose a natural treatment, you can continue to eat their eggs.
How To Treat Poultry Mites
Wood ash can be obtained from a fire pit or wood stove. Any wood ash will work as long as it is moist and completely cooled. It’s fine if it still has a bit of character, you don’t need to be too precise.
Safety glasses and a dust mask are for your protection. Dust is flying everywhere and trust me, you don’t want to inhale it and get it in your eyes. Be careful when applying this natural treatment for chicken lice!
Diatomaceous earth is a natural dust that kills and prevents small harmful insects. You can find it online or at stores like Lowe’s, Tractor Supply or Running. We want to buy food grade DE to use for this natural treatment.
Start in a well-ventilated area near the cage. We love chicken coops because there is plenty of fresh air and they are fenced off so the chickens are not at risk of escaping.
Pests Of Backyard Poultry
Do not try to put chicken dust in the chicken coop, the dust stays in the air for hours, making it difficult for your chickens to breathe fresh air.
Carefully pour the diatomaceous earth and wood ash into your bin or box. You need these to fit into the box in equal parts, but there’s no need to measure, it’s not exactly rocket science!
Mix the wood ash and DE to combine, being careful not to over stir or it will aerate.
This step is much easier with a partner. Chickens magically develop superpowers when they’re stressed, and this move completely stresses them out. It’s hard to hold the chicken and the mop at the same time, so if you can find a low-powered vacuum ready to help with this step, do it!
Lice & Mites In Your Chicken Flock And How To Treat
Pick up one chicken at a time and bring it to the litter box. Hold the chicken’s wings against his body and place his head under his arm. Placing a chicken head under your arm will keep it calm and less likely to stick chicken wings in your crazy face. Give the chicken a few seconds to settle into this position before continuing.
Starting with the vent, brush the chicken generously with the DE/wood ash mixture. While you are doing this, place the chicken in the box so that the excess dust falls back into the box.
And it’s better if he doesn’t, because if his feet touch solid ground, he’ll use that against you to try to escape.
To remove chicken powder, take the mixture and press it directly into the skin, then spread along the feathers with your fingers. Pay special attention to any area where you see lice or live lice, as they tend to congregate.

Other dust under the chicken’s wings, along the belly and back. You don’t need to get dust in your throat or face, you want to get as much out of your lungs as possible, so focus mainly on your body. When dusting, be sure to wash the feathers to remove as much dust from the chicken’s skin as possible.
Once you have dusted the bird, gently press on it to remove the excess dust and you can move on to the next one.
For this natural treatment to be successful, you must pollinate every bird in your flock. Even if you don’t find lice on some birds, if one chicken has lice, the others will or soon will. It’s best to cover all your bases and treat the whole herd.
The previous step helped kill the lice already grown on your chickens, but guess what? Before you kill them, those lice will lay eggs and those eggs will hatch into new lice. The entire life cycle of lice, unfortunately, includes the life cycle of birds, and you will need to get rid of newly hatched lice as well.
How To Get Rid Of Chicken Mites
If you look closely at your chicken’s feathers, you can see the eggs, which appear as white clumps around the feather shaft. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to kill chicken lice eggs, so you have to wait for the eggs to hatch and then destroy them.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 once a week until your chickens are lice free.
It usually takes 2-3 weeks of treatment. I know it’s a bad job and no one wants to do it, but if you don’t continue to treat your lice every week, the lice life cycle will never end.
To prevent the further spread of chicken lice, you need to help your chickens do what they do best, give them a dust bath!

An easy way to keep your chickens pest free is to set up a dust bath that they can use as often as they like. In the wild and free-range, chickens take daily powder baths to help remove dead skin and feathers and repel insects.
Place a dustbin/box in a chicken coop containing equal parts wood ash, diatomaceous earth, and potting soil or sand. Cover the area with dust to protect it from the rain, wood ash and rain don’t mix well! Having a place to dust will help
