Moles, voles and ground squirrels are often lumped together because they are all underground. However, while moles make large burrows like pigs as they dig into the soil, they rarely leave the lawn. If something is eating your garden, it’s not a mole.

“There are only three things that moles eat,” says Mike McGrath, host of the nationally syndicated radio program You Bet Your Garden. “They eat earthworms, they eat scarab beetle larvae, and they eat cicada larvae. So it’s very easy to remember: moles are young guys. They won’t eat anything plant-based if you pay them.”

Although moles look like mice from a distance, moles are not mice. They are more closely related to shrimp and bats.
Moles can be 5 to 7 inches long. It weighs only 5 to 6 ounces. Moles have noses without saliva, no external ears, and large shovel-like claws for digging. Moles have poor vision and rely on their sense of touch and smell to feed on bugs and larvae.

Moles are designed to dig and can dig with up to 32 times their own body weight – sometimes creating tunnels at a rate of 18 feet per hour! They can then travel through this tunnel at a speed of 80 feet per minute.
They make surface tunnels for food and deep tunnels to connect feeding tunnels. At the end of these deep tunnels are piles of dirt. Pilling is a sign that you have moles instead of cavities, which are actually rodents that eat plant roots and other plants.
Despite the misconception that moles eat plant buds and roots, moles are actually insectivores. In search of bugs, worms, beetles and other larvae, they damage plant roots and consume 70 to 100 percent of their body weight each day.
Mississippi’s black, soft, wet soil attracts an abundance of insects for moles. Your yard is also a haven for moles because it is virtually free of natural predators in the mole’s natural forest habitat.
How To Get Rid Of Moles And Keep Them Away
Moles are the most unpleasant thing to remove. To find areas of the latest nuclear activity, descend into some elevated tunnels and see what emerges over the next 24 hours.
Once you know where the mole lives, you can try some old home remedies to get rid of moles: razor blades, human hair, chewing gum, mothballs, and castor oil. Some of these chemicals are not effective and can do more harm than good to your lawn.
Poisonous plants are not good and are against fruit. Chemicals can seep into your soil, kill plants, or harm your animals. Save your money and avoid “peanut” or “gummy worm” coated baits; Moles do not have the lower jaws necessary for biting.

How To Stop Animals From Digging In Your Yard
A proven method of permanent mole removal is the lethal underground trap. There are many deadly traps to choose from, including sabers, harpoons, and spears. Another thing you can do is change your landscape by mulching your beds with pebbles or gravel instead of wood mulch. This will create a small welcoming area for insects and prevent moles from growing.
Create areas of rock compaction in your lawn to reduce soil moisture. Also consider whether the lawn is free of bugs and other debris that could be a food source for moles.
