Safe Way To Get Rid Of Rats Outside – Some of America’s major subways have begun using dry ice, a gruesome and apparently effective new killing tool, in their long and endless street battles with rats.
Rodent overpopulation is a long-standing problem in metropolitan Detroit, so if you’re trying to keep pesky rats out of your yard and neighborhood, you’re not alone.

But the practice often sparks neighborhood debates, including debates about the risks to the ecosystem and children from rodenticide use.
How To Get Rid Of Mice
To help with that, we consulted Southeast Oakland County experts and neighborhood rat patrols to put together five non-toxic ways to get rid of rats.
Owls and other birds of prey are natural rat killers. To attract owls, build an owl house in your garden, says Jan Bills, manager of the Royal Oak RATS (Residents are the Solution) Facebook page.
Bills says the opening in the house should be large enough for an owl to enter, but not so large that other large birds can enter. She also recommends putting the house on an 8- to 10-foot pole to keep squirrels out.
“Last summer I had a family of four owls [in my yard]. Let me tell you, I haven’t had any sign of rodents in my yard since I built the owl house. Birds of prey are the solution,” Bills said.

Most people know how to set traps to lure and kill rats. Consider traps, one of the more humane ways to kill rats because they can kill them quickly, Bills says. Be sure to place a trap inside the crate or under the milk carton to prevent other animals, such as raccoons or cats, from entering. Laura Mikluski, administrator of the Ferndale Rat Patrol Facebook group, added that traps can cause harm. She recommends peanut butter as bait. “It’s cheap and smells good, so it’s very attractive to rats,” she says. But she continued, everyone should experiment with what works in their garden. “For example, if you find rats eating mulberries in your yard, fruit jelly might be a better option,” Mikluski says.
If you find rats digging in your yard, Bills says this is the best solution. Rat pits are usually filled with loose soil and sloping holes, Bills said. Smoke bombs cannot be used if the cave is near trees, porches, or other flammable objects.
If the cave is on a porch or near an urban area, Mikuluski said, use dry ice. Dry ice produces carbon dioxide, which stuns and kills rats. “It’s very humane, very fast and very efficient,” Mikuluski said. Mikuluski said her group held a mouse raid day in downtown Ferndale on May 20. The group used about $150 worth of dry ice and killed more than 90 rats. He said dry ice produces CO2 gas and should not be used indoors where people or pets live. “It’s also incredibly cold and can damage the skin, so heavy gloves are essential to handle,” she said.
Experts say rats will eventually end up where there is food, so be careful what you feed your garden. The problem is the people,” said Bills of Royal Oak RATS. “As long as we continue to provide them with a food source, shelter and water, we will never reduce their population.”
Poison Free Pest Control
Keep your garden beds raised or harvest fruits and vegetables right away, says Luann Rinker, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Royal Oak. Also, keep the bird feeder at least 48 inches off the ground, attach baffles to posts and use bait blocks to prevent seed from spreading, and use shelled seed.
“A lot of people don’t take the time to really monitor their property, and some people just don’t want to deal with it,” Rinker said. “But the only way to control this situation is for all residents to take responsibility for looking after their gardens and hobbies properly.”
Let’s learn more about this topic. The Ferndale Rat Patrol will lead an educational session Aug. 22 at the Ferndale Public Library on how to effectively and humanely trap rats without poison. This session is open to the public. Rats can become a problem as soon as they settle in your garden, yard or home. Rats can cause a surprising amount of property damage in a short amount of time. Your home, car or yard is not safe from rats. Rats also pose a health risk because they transmit infectious diseases to humans and pets. Once a rodent problem is discovered, it is essential to get rid of the rodents as soon as possible to prevent them from returning. There are also steps that can be taken to prevent rats from appearing in the first place.
If you want to get rid of rats, you need to understand what attracts them to your garden. Some plants also attract rats, so you can attract them without even knowing it. To trap mice effectively, you must first understand why the mice are there. Anything that attracts rats must be removed for the trap to work.

Plants that grow fruits and vegetables attract rats because they are a good source of food. Rats and mice usually eat a variety of fruits. For example, oranges, avocados, peaches, lemons, figs. They also like walnuts and almonds. It is therefore important that all fallen fruit and nuts are removed as soon as possible and disposed of as soon as possible.
The odors and smells of pet droppings, pet food, trash cans, barbecues, bird food, and even unharvested fruits and nuts can attract rodents and rodents. Good hygiene practices can effectively prevent rodents from being attracted to your garden.
Rats prefer dense areas to open spaces. Since rats can protect themselves from predators, it is also an ideal place for rats to build a nest. To keep your yard free of rats, deny them access to shelters. Keep your garden clean and free of trees, brush, rubbish, compost piles, thick bushes, ground cover and ivy. They will eventually attract rats. Also keep the vault properly sealed. Repair or seal all openings with durable materials such as concrete, metal flashing, steel wool or heavy-duty welding wire.
Most rats need a constant source of water and tend to stay near these sources. Water sources that supply these rodents with water should be removed, covered or repaired. These include swimming pools, leaky faucets, irrigation lines, pet water bowls, and other sources of standing water.
How To Keep Mice Out Of Your House
There are several different types of mousetraps. Each type of trap has a different way of catching mice, but they are all effective. Consider the pros and cons of each trap type and choose the one that best suits your situation.
With the right bait and placement, traditional traps remain the most popular and effective method of catching mice. Since these rodents mainly eat nuts and seeds, a small amount of peanut butter or hazelnut spread works best. Materials such as cotton balls, dental floss, string, and twine can also be used to lure rodents, as rodents are slower and more focused on nest building when the outside temperature drops. Also, be sure to use gloves during setup. Rodents can smell the traps you are handling and prevent them from reaching the trap.
Be very careful when setting mousetraps. You have to watch where they are and what else can get to them.
Automatic feeders are good for luring and poisoning rats. These traps attract rodents with their pleasant smell, but the rodents die soon after being eaten due to internal bleeding or kidney, liver or heart failure (depending on the poison). Another disadvantage is that rodents tend to die in hard-to-reach places, and as a result, you’ll encounter a putrid smell that will worsen over time until the carcass is disposed of properly. For this reason, it is recommended to use outdoor rat feeders.

Electronic mousetraps are considered the most modern and effective traps for rodents. These traps lure rodents with bait that feeds on the metal plate inside, causing them to be instantly electrocuted. This is the most humane approach compared to bite traps and poison traps, and rat death is almost instantaneous. In addition, these traps are powered by batteries, so they can also be used as outdoor mousetraps.
These traps can catch rats alive and remove them. This is the most humane approach to not killing rodents. Ideally, rats should be released 200 to 300 feet from your home. If you have children or pets in your home, this is the perfect solution.
