I try to avoid using flea and tick repellants because of the toxic ingredients. They are not comfortable for me to wear on my dogs, especially when my kids love to hang out with our animals.

Geranium oil (specifically the species, Pelargonium graveolens) has been shown in studies to be as effective at keeping ticks away as DEET.

The Latin or scientific name is important here – it is Pelargonium graveolensparte. Some essential oils are labeled Rose Geranium, while others are simply Geranium. The Latin name is key there.
I have not used other brands and cannot vouch for their effectiveness. I’ve heard some people have had mixed results with the brand so far.

I put 1-2 drops of geranium essential oil directly on my dog’s back between his shoulder blades (like the recommended mosquito repellent) and it worked great. Even my vet is okay with that.
But as I learned more about essential oils and got my certification as an essential oil coach (independent of any essential oil company), I took a different approach for 2 reasons:

#1 Do not use this tick spray on cats. Cats are very sensitive to essential oils and it is not safe for cats.

It’s okay to spray your dog if you have cats, but don’t spray on or directly near your cat.
#2 Please review with your own vet (preferably a holistic vet as they better understand natural methods including essential oils) and do your own research before using this or any essential oil on your pet. And always use common sense. Remember that essential oils are very powerful!
Note: I chose not to use coconut oil or other emulsifiers with this recipe because I didn’t want to end up with a greasy mess on my dog’s fur. You should shake this tick spray well before each use of the essential oil mixture.

Natural Protection For Fleas, Ticks And Mosquitos
Fill a spray bottle 1/3 full with apple cider vinegar. You don’t have to measure or be precise.
… then 5 drops of cedarwood essential oil. If you have a larger spray bottle, increase the number of drops accordingly. So if you have an 8 ounce bottle, use 20 drops of geranium and 10 drops of cedar, etc.
This tick spray has worked well for our dogs. It works best if you apply every 3-4 days.
If your dog gets ticks occasionally – maybe you went for a walk at the weekend – you can spray him first.
