In one study, petroleum jelly killed about 62 percent of head lice. It works better than other home remedies like mayonnaise, olive oil, butter, and vinegar. Lice eggs are small (about the size of a poppy) and are well embedded in the hair. If you don’t look closely, you might miss them. Lice eggs and dandruff are often confused, but some key differences are that lice eggs are teardrop-shaped and stick to one side of the hair shaft.

If you haven’t decided to try petroleum jelly lice treatment, I don’t recommend it, but it’s dangerous and you’ll spend hours trying to get it out of your hair. Also, it doesn’t get rid of lice.

What Is The Best Lice Treatment?
I would not recommend petroleum jelly as a lice treatment to anyone. While it killed a certain percentage of lice (62%), it wasn’t very attractive. Leaving petroleum jelly in a child’s hair for 10 days thinking it will help get rid of lice eggs is foolish! And vaseline is hard to wash out of your hair, so your baby will be wet in a matter of weeks! no thanks.
