When you think of HGTV, you probably think of a “modern farmhouse,” but the look is so much more than your current home improvement show. Modern farmhouse style is all about creating a warm, welcoming space that feels updated and modern without looking too trendy. A modern farmhouse bathroom that uses other design styles, such as minimalist and Scandinavian, is more relaxed and peaceful than anything else.
Small Farmhouse Bathroom Ideas You’ll Love
There are many ways to incorporate a modern farmhouse into your bathroom, but there are a few key details that carry the style all the way. Attention to detail is key to the universally accepted aesthetic, from rustic reclaimed wood to vintage finishes.
We rounded up our favorite modern farmhouse bathrooms and asked a few experts for their tips and tricks for working with the style.
While modern farmhouse items may seem a little rustic, this decorating style certainly has a look all its own. According to Sherry Lingafelt, founder of Accent Prone, “A modern farmhouse looks a little more sophisticated and modern than just rustic.”
It’s important to add a few small or modern details to your space to keep any farmhouse item from feeling too shabby.

A fun way to add modern farmhouse touches to a rather modern bathroom? “Add a sliding barn door,” says Lingafelt. Not only does it give you more square footage to work with, it’s perfect for small spaces and adds the visual interest you need to take your bathroom to the next level.
Jade Joyner, founder of Metal + Petals, creates a modern farmhouse look with an emphasis on simple, clean touches. “The farmhouse bathrooms are known for having matte black fixtures and white subway tiles — very Chip and Joanna,” says Joyner.
Don’t be afraid to add a touch of nostalgia, advises Joyner. Country-specific details combine with clean accents for a contemporary look.
While most modern farmhouse bathrooms feature neutral colors and simple textures, Joyner says she likes to mix and match decorative elements when working with modern farmhouses.
How To Design A Rustic Farmhouse Bathroom
“I like to sneak into a farmhouse bathroom because it’s a solid color for a modern wall color or for a bit of pop with a great wallpaper,” she says. “Nobody wants their house to look like their neighbour’s.” Embrace the style, but personalize it.” Add a fun tile or bold bathroom decor to bring it home.
Joyner’s best advice for homeowners decorating with this look? “Don’t go with a farmhouse theme or just a view, as that will make the space look flat,” she says. “Instead, add textures and layers and combine your collection with bold pieces of contemporary art.”
For a time, the owners seemed to be moving away from brown woodwork in favor of a clean, crisp white look. But Candace Plotz, lead designer and founder of Candace Plotz Design, says it’s time to bring them back.
“In the design industry, we are seeing a resurgence of wood,” Poltz said. “If you want to add exceptional texture and warmth to a cold space, white oak is a great choice for a vanity.”

Textiles are a great way to add warmth and comfort to your bathroom. Here, the quilt ladder is used to display Turkish shawls, which are both textural and visually functional.
Going for a farmhouse bathroom doesn’t mean giving up on fun patterned tiles. Instead, keep it subtle and consider adding a small backsplash to update the space without taking away from the room’s neutral elements.
In the fashion world, people love or hate boats. But we think ships can get a bad rap. When mixed with other modern elements, shiplap is a great way to add lots of texture to your bathroom without overwhelming the space or feeling too garish.
Lindsey Borchardt of Lindsey Brooke Design helped her clients transform their downstairs bathroom into an incredibly fresh contemporary farmhouse look.
How To Use Reclaimed Barn Boards In The Bathroom — Simple Home
“We wanted to make sure this bathroom had modern farmhouse elements while still being classic and timeless,” she says. “We were able to soften the space by using white with different shades and patterns, adding warm wood tones and giving it a farmhouse feel.”
The easiest way to introduce a modern farmhouse into your home is through the use of objects. A stylish vintage vase or vase is a simple and effective way to add a bit of luxury to your bathroom without breaking the bank.
From wood to marble to concrete, modern farmhouse bathrooms are made with natural materials. Forget the artificial stuff and fill your space with warm, inviting colors for years to come.
Finding storage in any bathroom can be tricky, but if you’re looking to add a little extra space for your essentials, consider floating shelves made from reclaimed wood. This gives the bathroom a modern farmhouse look while providing more space for the toilet.

Instead of a drawer vanity, think exposed. Here, the luxurious gold piping gives this space a classic feel and adds great interest to the space. This is a great idea for a powder room where you don’t have to hide under the sink much.
One way to achieve a simple bathroom and achieve a modern farmhouse feel is to replace traditional fixtures and sinks with metal sinks.
We never tire of this luxurious wardrobe. Rich wood tones make this powder room very inviting, and vintage elements feel classic without being dated or stuffy. It may sound strange to admit, but I think I can spend hours cooped up in my new master bathroom.
After five years of wishing, dreaming and rocking, I finally have the bathroom that every woman deserves.

I never thought this day would come, but I’m so excited to share this 1980s bathroom find with you today.
**For your shopping pleasure, I’ve listed affiliate links to all of the decor sources I’ve used at the bottom of this article.**
So before I get into the pretty pictures, I thought I’d give you a little preview of what I’ve been working on (and for those of you who missed the original design plan post, click here)…
As you can see in the “before” photo above, the 1980s bathroom was basically the opposite of my style. With no natural light source and a small shower, the space felt more like a cave than a proper master suite. In fact, the sparkling bathroom in our house has always surprised me over my fixer upper.

All of the living areas are relatively spacious and open (with lots of natural light), but the bathroom seems like more of an afterthought…and I wanted more of the house, so that was fine at first . more than anything, it’s about family and fun. No bathroom parties (or maybe I’m not that crazy).
Along with digging out and reinstalling our pool, this master bathroom renovation was one of our biggest renovations to date.
We decided to keep this space, but by knocking down the wall between the bath and the shower (in addition to installing a window), we radically changed the look of the bathroom.
To take advantage of the limited space we had to work with (our bathroom dimensions are only 12′ long x 8′ deep), we decided to demolish the original jacuzzi skirt.
