As I mentioned before, the first part of ripping the pads, removing the base, scraping off the glue and other debris, attaching the molding, filing the wood, and placing the risers was done in another blog post because it was too long up. Also check out the first part of this project.

As I shop around home improvement stores and browse the internet, I notice the limitations of color. This is a complete departure from the light gray floor above. I thought about using a black stain and bought one to try… PolyShades Classic Black and Polyurethane (here), this dirt and protection jacket in one.
I bought some gray swatches because I already knew dark stains wouldn’t please me. Dirt, dust and hair are more visible in dark areas.

Yes, the wood/outdoor deck stains ended up being my favorite because I love the variety of colors, but that’s where the story gets interesting, or should I say neat! The selection is excellent, close to the gray floor above. They are also somewhat transparent or solid. I wanted something that would cover up the horrible imperfections of cheap wood and damage to carpet plugs when stepped on.

As you can see in the picture above, I put some stain samples on the wood parts so I could test them. I love the Behr Advanced Waterproof Stain and Sealer color SC-365 Cape Cod Gray and asked if I could use the exterior stain indoors.

So I started looking into using outdoors indoors because I really like outdoors.
Now let me explain the controversial topic of using outdoor stains in the home and why I chose to go this route. I did my research and made a decision based on that. I’m not an expert and I’m not responsible for anyone’s decisions.

I would say that interior and exterior wood stains are somewhat toxic because of the fumes and chemicals added to protect the wood. Exterior deck stains often contain added chemicals such as fungicides, preservatives, and insecticides.
But interior stains are still toxic and contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). You should always read the manufacturer’s label.
Even if you use stain indoors, you should not breathe stain fumes and always use a protective respirator.

Our Dramatic Staircase Makeover
Since exterior stains must be able to resist the elements in order to protect the wood, they are also designed to be durable.
The most important part of repairing any type of staircase is to always clean everything thoroughly before using any product. The most important gadget for me is the flannelette because even after cleaning and cleaning the stairs, the cloth still has a lot of lint on it. If I hadn’t used a putty cloth on the bare wood, all the lint, debris, and dirt would have stayed on the stain and paint.
For painting the white risers, I like to use the small roller mentioned in the supply list. They work well with my favorite white paint. Keep in mind that I placed the steps after removing the struts. So I don’t have to do it anymore.
I use a roller on the risers, a little on the sides, and the rest I cut and paint with a fine brush.
Staining Staircase Steps
I talked about painters tape for those of you who like to tape before painting. Now, when I paint some projects, I cut them by hand with a fine paintbrush. This is one of those projects.
Before cutting and painting each step, I made sure to use the Rabbit again. I applied two coats on the right side first (yes, they last like paint) and when the left side dries we can go to the left side. It’s not the best way, as you may end up with a line where the two sides meet. The best way would be to paint/paint some stairs, but at the time we had small kids and couldn’t jump big. So this route is the second best route.
Once you’re done with the stain, it’s time to apply the topcoat. I use Minwax Polyurethane for Floor Clear Satin Oil Based Polyurethane and apply it with a synthetic pad applicator and a high quality polyurethane brush. In retrospect, I should have done more than two coats like the neighbor mentioned below.
Stair refinishing is the same process of removing, filling, sanding, cleaning and refinishing old carpet that I covered in my last blog post and above, but this time you’ll be using standard wood runners and polyurethane runners.
This Is How To Remove Carpet From Stairs
My neighbor used a natural color stain to match the polyurethane after having yellow floors. They applied the stain with a foam brush and wiped down the access points with a paint pad and a few rags.
After the first coat of poly was applied, when the stain showed up, they quickly realized that the varnish took too long to dry, which posed a problem for me during the project trying to figure out how to use the stairs. Fortunately, they don’t have young children and are able to complete all the other steps.
They also ended up putting on 5 coats of polyurethane to make sure the main areas were well protected. The polymer will create a little air pocket between coats. If this happens, use fine sandpaper to smooth out the air bubbles a bit, then wipe with a cloth, then add another layer of poly.
This is how we now look with gray stain and gray solid bamboo flooring on our outside deck.
Refinishing An Hardwood Staircase
In the left corner, climb up another set of stairs. There might be natural wood on the floor, gray wood on the landing, natural wood on the other stairs, gray wood on the top… so I’d like to make a better change.
By the way, here is a before and after picture showing how it would look with a gray Pearl City Bamboo floor from Lumbar Liquidators.
The story doesn’t end there. I want the stairs to be a light colored natural wood like the ground floor. Due to the quality of the wood and the way it was damaged it didn’t look very good.
However, I have found a way to incorporate natural light wood into the staircase design. When you look at it from above, it connects with the gray floor. Also, if you look up from the ground, you can see the light colored wood. I’m waiting for building materials, hope there will be more
