A deck or patio is a great place to hang out in the summer. Whether you’re going to barbecue or just reading a good book in the fresh air, spring and summer are the best time in the group. But all that can be ruined by swarms of pesky mosquitoes. Who wants to go out when you’re being eaten alive? There are several ways to keep mosquitoes off your porch or patio this season. Some work better than others, but here is the list!
How To Keep Mosquitoes Out Of My House
Mosquitoes need stagnant water to lay their eggs. Larvae live in stagnant water. Without stagnant water, mosquitoes cannot reproduce. On the other hand, the presence of standing water will not only provide a home for baby mosquitoes, but will also attract adult mosquitoes to look for a place to lay their eggs.

Look for containers or toys where children can catch and spill water. Turn the container when not in use to prevent the accumulation of rainwater. Also check your gutters. If your gutters are collecting water, you may need to clear the clog or simply correct the angle so that the water drains properly.
It is easy to drain the water that has accumulated on your terrace. But if you have standing water under your deck, you are doing yourself a disservice. If water is pooling under your deck, you have a number of possible solutions. If you have a small puddle, you can try putting sand under the deck. Sand absorbs water and prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in puddles. If you have larger puddles, you may need to install a drain. French drains work well under decks to remove standing water.
If you have standing water on your patio that you can’t drain, you have other options. An example is a bird bath. Or maybe a water feature. Since you are not burning it, you can move the water with a fountain or treat the water with dunks or mosquito nets. The fountain will lower the water enough so that it cannot be treated with mosquito eggs. Mosquito dunks and patches are products that can be added to standing water and release bacteria that kill mosquito larvae.
If you think you’ve removed all the standing water from your deck, there’s one last place to check. The gutters above your patio may have water that you can’t see. If so, you need to get in there and remove the gutter. Any standing water is an open invitation to mosquitoes and their eggs.

Mosquitoes love the still air. In fact, they can barely fly in winds over 2 mph. But you don’t have to wait for a windy day to go outside. Installing an oscillating fan (or two) can make it more difficult for mosquitoes to fly around the terrace or patio. As an added bonus, the fans will keep you cool during the hot Georgia summer.
This is a bit dubious. But there are some plants that are said to repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes usually find their prey by smell, so some of these strong-smelling plants can help repel them. Some recommended plants include citronella, mint, rosemary and lemongrass. Make sure the pot you plant in has good drainage. The last thing you need is more standing water. Although this method is a bit suspect, you won’t lose much by trying it. At least your body smells!
Cutting the lawn is not the only way to keep the lawn tidy. It can also help keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes tend to rest in long grass, dense bushes and forests. If you keep your grass short and can trim your bushes, there are fewer places for mosquitoes to hide. If your yard borders a forest or a slow-moving stream, this is especially important. You want mosquitoes to stick to bushes and slow moving water and not get into your beautiful garden.
Like planting mosquito repellent plants, it depends on the mosquito’s senses. There is a vendor selling incense that repels mosquitoes. Of course, the smoke is very unpleasant for mosquitoes and they stay away. We’re not sure how well they work, but it’s worth a try.
How To Get Rid Of Mosquitoes Inside The House
Birds and bats are natural enemies of mosquitoes. Birds and bats eat mosquitoes and can control the mosquito population in your garden. You can attract birds and bats with feeders or bird and bat houses. Make sure that feeders and houses do not collect standing water. As always, anything that creates standing water is not a good way to keep mosquitoes at bay.
For local, short-term relief from mosquitoes, you can use citronella candles or torches. Keeping a lit candle on or near the table where you eat can keep mosquitoes away while you eat. This doesn’t actually reduce the mosquito population, but it might keep them out of your face for a while.
One way to use citronella is to go all out and build a lemongrass wall. Place citronella candles around the perimeter of your porch or patio, about 6 to 8 feet apart. If you have a lot of mosquitoes, keep them 2 to 3 feet apart. The theory is that this will create an anti-mosquito wall that mosquitoes will not pass through to reach your patio. Again, we’re not sure how effective it is and the smoke may not be pleasant. But if you want to fight the local mosquito population, try it at your own risk.
It doesn’t actually keep mosquitoes off your porch or patio, but it does keep them away from you. The World Health Organization strongly endorses DEET as an effective mosquito repellent. It’s tried and true, with billions of people using it since it was discovered by the US military in 1944. A newer repellent is Picaridin, which is also recommended by health organizations.
Simple Ways To Keep Mosquitoes Away
It’s a little drastic, but if you’re really just tired of mosquitoes, it might be worth it. Enclosing a screened porch is not the cheapest option. But it can keep mosquitoes and other insects away from your private space. If you cover your patio, make sure you also install a screen under the patio floor to prevent mosquitoes from flying through the space between the patio panels.
