There are many steps you can take to keep animals out of your pond. Usually a combination of these steps and some dedication is required to save your fish.
1. Fish caves: Creating fish caves in your pond from scratch is your first line of defense. Fish caves give your fish a place to hide when threatened. For cave fish to be effective, they must be placed deep enough at the bottom of your pond. We recommend at least 2′-3′ deep.
2. Dogs: A dog can be the best protection against predators. Not all dogs are good at hunting, so we recommend birds: Labradors, Spaniels, Pointers, English Setters, etc.

Solution: If you are building a pool from scratch, consider making the sides vertical, but remember that these must be reinforced or they will sink. Also, a pool with vertical sides may not be attractive to other wildlife. Hedgehogs can fall into straight ponds, and if there is no way to escape, they will drown, so care should be taken before building a straight pond.

If it is not possible to modify the profile of the edge of the existing pond, place a string of polyethylene floats, spaced less than 30 cm, floating along the edge of the pond: herons refuse to eat at or higher than the float (see Figure 2).
