How To Get Rid Of Small Mosquitoes In House – Here’s how to make a mosquito trap using a 2 liter plastic soda bottle. All you have to do is add some bait (honey, fruit, juice, sugar water or flowers containing nectar) and place it in a dark corner of the room. It works because mosquitoes seek out the sugar they need for fuel. Once they’re in the bottle, they can’t get out.
The instructions above are a modification of a Taiwanese science fair that ended up going wrong. The difference between the original instructions and mine is that (1) I don’t recommend adding dry yeast, (2) I suggest sugar other than cane sugar, and (3) I don’t wrap the trap in black paper. Leaving out the yeast is because I don’t think the production of carbon dioxide is necessary to attract the mosquitoes to the sugar. In fact, adding yeast probably reduces attraction and causes the trap to fail faster.

Mosquitoes are known to suck blood, but like many insects they spend most of their lives peacefully consuming sugar from flowers and rotting fruit. For example, here are some mosquitoes that are killed in the middle of the day:
So when mosquitoes are trapped inside, they will target whatever you have on your counter – fruit, puddles of syrup, cut flowers or even a dirty sponge. I don’t have photos of mosquitoes eating fruit indoors, but Justin Yoshida (Thailand) has: on jackfruit, on apple slices, and on eggplant. Indoor mosquitoes are probably not particularly picky about the type of fruit, as this option starves. Mosquitoes even fall into containers of juice and apparently die, one restaurant found. And here is a mosquito eating brioche at my house:
If you’re skeptical that these traps can actually work, here’s a video of someone who followed the original (scientifically sound) instructions and killed 9-10 mosquitoes in 24 hours:
Don’t bother using these traps outside (virus versions are recommended). Mosquitoes prefer natural sources of sugar, so they will probably ignore everything in the container. Traps also won’t work in rooms full of flowering plants or rotting fruit. Also, if your kids spill juice and soda all over the place, the traps won’t work.

If you have a house free of small children and pets, you can add a little boric acid to the solution to create an attractive Toxic Sugar Bait (ATSB) station. Then, when the mosquitoes ingest the liquid, they die, even if they manage to escape the trap (it can happen). In fact, once you have the poison in the liquid, you can and should get rid of the funnel part of the trap – its presence is probably a deterrent for some mosquitoes, even though it is relatively wide (~2cm). Instead, cut a 3cm hole in the side and leave the cap on the bottle. Note that since these devices are indoors, you don’t have to worry about the boric acid (or anything else) poisoning the pollinators in your garden.
