The simple truth is this: If you have a barn, barn, and/or animal barn, you’ve probably encountered rats. Food and nesting sites are abundant in these warm areas, especially when the weather is cold. Although rats hide most of the time, it is not a small problem, and it is definitely not an “out of sight, out of mind” kind of problem! According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), rodents destroy more than two billion dollars of animal feed every year. But that’s not all they can do:
If you see rats or mice during the day, your number is confirmed. The general rule is: For every mouse you see around the coop, barn, or chicken coop, there are 25 to 50 mice.
Unfortunately, rats rarely move more than 100 feet from their burrows, and rats rarely move more than 10 to 30 feet.
Don’t wait to solve your rodent problem! Both rats and mice reproduce quickly. A female mouse can give birth to up to 56 babies a year. Norway rats produce an average of four to eight litters per litter, producing four to six litters per year.

Part of a rodent control program includes preventing access to food and water, and keeping buildings neat and clean to avoid providing shelter.
If the rat problem continues, some method of reducing the rat population, such as trapping or hunting, is always necessary. Unfortunately, ultrasound or other applications of sound or movement do not deter mice. There is also no long lasting insect repellent. Below are many answers. (Remember, nothing will work without rodent control and disinfection as described above!)

Owls and other birds of prey destroy rodents. To attract owls, build an owl house in your yard, says Jan Bills, manager of the Royal Oak RATS (Residents are the Solution) Facebook page.

“The opening of the house needs to be big enough for an owl, but not big enough for other large birds to live in,” says Beers. “Also, put this house on a pole of 8 to 10 meters so that it does not move,” he says.
“I had four owls in my house (in my yard) last summer. I will tell you that I have never seen signs of rodents in my yard since I built my owl house, so basically, raptors are the solution,” Bills said.
Using bait to attract and kill mice is a common practice. Consider using traps, which are a more humane method of rodent control because they kill rodents quickly, Beers said. Be sure to place the trap in the box or under the milk crate so that other animals, such as raccoons and cats, cannot grab it. Laura Mikulski, manager of the Ferndale Rat Patrol Facebook group, added, “You can get hurt by a trap.” He recommends peanut butter as bait. “It is an expensive, tasty and attractive mouse,” he said. But, he continued, everyone should try what works in their backyard. “For example, if you find mice eating berry trees in your yard, jelly may be a better choice,” says Mikulski.
If you see rat holes in your yard, this is the best solution, says Beers. Rat mines usually have a lot of loose soil and a sloped pit, Beers said. Smoke bombs cannot be used if the cave is near trees, porches, or other flammable structures.

Mikulski says to use dry ice or a cave near a porch or near an urban area. Dry ice releases carbon dioxide, which animates and kills mice. “It’s personal, it’s fast, it works very well.” Mikulski said his group held Rat Hole Day on May 20 in the Ferndale area. The group spent about $150 on hard ice to kill more than 90 mice. Because dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas, it should not be used in confined spaces where people or pets live, he said. “It’s very cold and it can damage the skin, so you have to wear heavy gloves when you do it,” he said.
Eventually, mice will go for food, so keep food in your yard under control, experts say. “Rats are not the problem. People are the problem,” said Bills of Royal Oak RATS. “If we continue to give them food, shelter and water, we will never reduce the population.
LuAnn Linker, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Royal Oak, says to keep garden beds raised or make sure ripe fruits and vegetables are harvested there. Also, raise the bird feeder about 48 inches off the ground, place sticks on top of the sticks, and use food bricks to provide the birds. Do not sow seeds and use pre-shelled seeds.
“Most people don’t take the time to flood their stuff, and some don’t want to deal with it,” Link said. “But the only way we’re going to get this back on track is for every citizen to take responsibility for the good management of their yard, and do whatever they can.”
