How To Get Rid Of Mosquitoes Outside – Here are instructions for making a mosquito trap using a 2 liter plastic bottle. It is enough to add some food (honey, fruit, juice, sugar water or juicy flowers) and put it in a dark corner of the room. This works because mosquitoes are looking for sugar, which they have to feed themselves. Once inside the bottle, they cannot come out.
The instructions above are a modification of a Taiwanese science fair project that eventually went viral. The differences between the original and mine are: (1) I don’t recommend adding active dry yeast, (2) I recommend sugar sources other than granulated sugar, and (3) I don’t wrap the trap in black paper. Since no yeast is added, I don’t think carbon dioxide is needed to attract the gnats to the sugar. In fact, adding yeast will likely reduce attraction and cause the trap to fail more quickly.

Don’t bother using these traps externally (suggested by virus releases). Mosquitoes love natural sources of sugar, so they ignore anything in the container. The trap also won’t work in rooms full of flowering plants or rotting fruit. Likewise, traps won’t work if your kids spill juice and soda everywhere.
Mosquitoes And Standing Water
If you have a home without small children and pets, you can add some boric acid to the solution to make an attractive Toxic Sugar Bait Station (ATSB). Then when the mosquitoes ingest the liquid they die (maybe) even if they escape the trap. Indeed, when the toxin is in the liquid, the funnel-shaped part of the trap can and should be simply removed: its presence, although relatively large (~ 2 cm), is a deterrent for some mosquitoes. Instead, make a 3 cm hole in the side and keep the cork in the bottle. Note that since these devices are enclosed, you don’t have to worry about boric acid (or whatever) poisoning the pollinators in your garden.
The following “yeast and sugar” products are advertised for outdoor mosquito control in the US: Spartan Mosquito Eradicator, Spartan Mosquito Pro Tech, Sock-It Skeeter, Donaldson Farms Mosquito Eliminator, Mosquito XT, Aion Mosquito Barrier, The Skeeter. Bait Station, Gus’ grandfather’s mosquito dynamite, Tom’s mosquito harder than TNT, and X solution. I reviewed them all here (they don’t work). There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes in the world, and about 200 of them live in the United States alone, and if you have to deal with these little bloodsuckers, your summer plans in your yard can be ruined. If you have any unnecessary items in your yard that hold water, get rid of them. Old tires are a known culprit; not only do they hold water, but they also provide the perfect warm, sheltered environment for mosquitoes to breed, so throw them away. If you are using a rubber swing, cut a hole in the bottom to allow water to flow freely.
The best time to look is after a rainstorm, when water has accumulated on small items that you might not consider a problem.
This localized method of mosquito control is best for small areas around a gazebo or hammock. Plus, if you’re the camping type, you can reuse the extra netting that covers your bed on overnight hikes.
All mosquitoes lay their eggs in water and eat very little. Reducing, if not eliminating, the mosquito threat is the first step. “We create all these areas to collect water, which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” says Jundt.
How To Kill Mosquitoes: What Works, What Doesn’t
A 6-inch diameter saucer with 1/2 inch of water may be sufficient for breeding mosquitoes. “It only takes 8 to 10 days for an egg to develop into a large mosquito,” says Jundt. “It doesn’t take much.”
She recommends draining things like plant pots, dog bowls and birdbaths with regular water. Then, if necessary, fill them with fresh water. Change the water in sources such as dog bowls and birdbaths at least daily; Most mosquito eggs will hatch within 48 hours (and your dog will thank you).
Children’s toys, buckets, puddles, and anything else that holds water but you don’t want to throw away should be turned away when not in use to avoid being filled with rainwater.

In the winter, your gutters can become clogged with debris, meaning they no longer drain well. Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent runoff and create a pleasant environment for skaters.
Fix holes in window and door screens to keep mosquitoes from becoming an indoor problem. Finally, pull weeds near the foundation and mow the lawn low to reduce potential mosquito habitat.
If you’re using a tarp to cover a woodpile, motorboat, grill, or other large items, make sure it’s tight. Otherwise, rainwater will accumulate in bends and low places. If you can’t remove the tarp, remove it completely to empty it (and consider buying a new one).
Most garden supply and hardware stores sell landscape insect repellants or pellets. Use them carefully and only when necessary; most contain pyrethrins or their synthetic form, pyrethroids. According to the National Pesticide Information Center, pyrethrins are natural insecticides derived from chrysanthemums, but natural does not mean nontoxic, and pyrethrins can cause skin irritation on direct contact.

Pyrethrins also kill a variety of insects: mosquitoes and ticks, as well as pollinators such as honey bees and beneficial insects such as ladybugs.
