How To Get Rid Of Lawn Weeds – One of my favorite parts of gardening is weeding! New ones appear daily in my lawn and garden and I avoid spraying commercial herbicides. I’d like the baby and the dog to be able to play in the grass without worrying about toxic chemicals, and I certainly don’t want any of that next to the vegetables we plan to eat! Fortunately, there are many ways to get rid of weeds naturally. Here are my favorites!
In addition to being potentially dangerous to children and pets playing outside, strong chemical herbicides can also contribute to water pollution. When it rains, these chemicals can wash off and contaminate the sewer system and groundwater.
How To Get Rid Of Lawn Weeds
This may seem obvious, but you can always dig a small hole and pull out the weeds by hand. This is a great way to get rid of random weeds that pop up in your vegetable garden.

Water the area first to soften the soil, then pull the weeds. I like to use this water-selective strain for long-rooted dandelions and other weeds. It attaches to your hose and shoots a small stream of water down to the ground, loosening the soil down to the roots. You can also use a butter knife or screwdriver and drive it into the soil near the root to loosen the dirt below the surface.

Don’t use salt to kill weeds in your lawn or garden, but it is a great solution for weeds along the edges of your lawn or in cracks in your sidewalk or driveway. Remember that salt can corrode concrete, so use it sparingly.

The best way to apply salt as a herbicide is to mix 1 part salt to 6 parts warm water. The acetic acid in vinegar makes it an effective herbicide. The vinegar you can buy at the grocery store is usually 5% acetic acid, which should be strong enough for most weeds. Put a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle to help the vinegar stick to the plant, then spray the leaves and stems of the weeds you want to get rid of.
You can also find stronger vinegar options with 20% or even 30% acetic acid at most garden centers. Be sure to wear gloves and a respirator if using the stronger version!
Alcohol is an excellent weed killer because it will dry out the unwanted plant. You can use alcohol or cheap vodka for this. will work Add 2 ounces of rubbing alcohol to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of dish soap to help the mixture stick to the plant, then spray the leaves and stems of the weed.
