One of the easiest and most effective ways to get rid of gophers in your lawn is to set up a live trap. Place a live trap at the entrance to the gopher’s den and add some bait, such as carrot or celery sticks and peanut butter. Check the trap twice daily, and if you catch a gopher, work with local authorities to relocate the gopher to a suitable environment. Another option is to use mosquito repellent to keep them off your lawn. Start by placing castor oil granules, peppermint oil, or flush sheets in the hole closest to your home. Wait 1-2 days, then place more repellers in a few holes a little further away. Repeat the process until you have added repellent to the outer holes. If natural methods don’t work, you can use a live gopher poison containing zinc phosphide to kill the gopher. Drop the bait into the holes, taking care to keep it away from children and pets. To keep them from returning, try planting natural mosquito repellants such as lavender, rosemary, strawberries and peppermint. You can dig a trench and bury a sheet of metal around them to prevent gophers from digging through your vegetable or flower plots. If you have to use lethal means to get rid of gophers, read on. When soil-dwelling pests colonize your lawn, the results can be crazy. Gophers, moles and flies can cause significant damage in a relatively short amount of time, so most homeowners can stay one step ahead. Without quick, effective action and the right pest control products, your hard-earned lawn can be ruined. Success against gophers, moles, and voles depends on correctly identifying the culprit and meeting challenges.

Gophers are elusive creatures that rarely show themselves, but their freshly dug soil leaves no doubt that they are nearby. Identify gopher mounds by their crescent shapes and hidden entry points. A mound of gopher fans around the plug hole, an underground tunnel of concentrated dust. Viewed from the side, the hill slopes toward the gopher entrance.

Like other true rodents, gophers have long incisors that grow continuously. Bite short, chisel-like teeth with large, powerful claws on the gopher’s front legs. These short-tailed herbivores feed on above- and below-ground plants. They feed on the roots and occasionally grab plants on the surface – including your favorite root vegetables. Gophers gnaw underground power lines and irrigation pipes, and pull plants out of tunnels by their roots.

Among the many species in the United States, gophers average 6 to 12 inches in length and are common everywhere except the Northeast. The highest concentration is found in the western part of the country, where gopher activity peaks year-round in the spring and fall.

Most gopher damage is too deep to be visible from above until erosion from heavy rains or floods exposes the extensive tunnels.

Moles, like gophers, leave dirt in the area through the entrance hole, but they also leave food channels raised below the soil surface that zigzag across the precious lawn. Unlike gopher mounds, conical mole mounds appear balanced from the side and have entry holes right in their center.

How To Get Rid Of Moles In Your Yard

Moles, often thought of as rodents, are insects more closely related to bats than rats. Instead of prominent incisors, moles’ teeth are suitable for feeding on earthworms, carrion and insects. Most mole damage to lawns and other plants occurs as a byproduct of feeding, displacing plant roots in shallow runways. Moles and passages run deep under the hills and are feeding tunnels.

Mole species are found throughout the United States, with the highest concentrations in the Midwest and East. Active except in very cold weather, moles average 6 to 8 inches in length.

You can recognize them by their small eyes, long pointed snout, short front legs, and large, glove-like front feet, which they use to move large amounts of soil.

Also called field or meadow mice, the campaign maintains a network of holes to enter underground habitats. Instead of mounds of dirt or high tunnels, these true rodents build trench-like runways on the ground between burrows and cover them with grass or snow. After the grass cover is removed or the snow melts, brown, grassless tracks suddenly appear.

Campagnol prefers a diet of grass roots, flowering plants and tree bark. As winter approaches, they store the seeds, tubers, rhizomes and bulbs of your favorite flowers. Under the protection of the snow cover, these pests are still actively feeding on the bark of trees and shrubs below the frost line, often trapping plants beyond repair. Campagnol prefers areas with strong grass and natural debris. Remove grass clippings and leaves, keep grass low and use tree guards to significantly reduce fly damage.

Different fly species found throughout the United States average 4 to 8 inches in length from nose to tip of tail. Although similar to common rats, voles are usually large and bulky, with partially hidden ears, short legs, and tails.

Effective pest control includes fumigants, traps, and baits. Choose a solution that suits your specific pests and preferences.

Disinfectants, such as gopher gas cartridges, release gases that travel through tunnels and hole systems in lawns and gardens, killing the pests hiding underneath. Once ignited, the pellet burns intensely in the tunnel until it is completely consumed. Disinfectants are most effective in moist soils, helping gases to concentrate in holes and tunnels.

How To Id And Kill Gophers

An easy-to-use trap like the Gopher trap removes lawn pests without gas or bait. Flytraps and common mice set aside throughout the run and covered with a box that does not interfere with movement. Gophers and moles require specially designed traps.

Bait Pellets products such as Mole* and Gopher Bait work when the target animal eats the bait and dies. The bait should be placed by hand in the underground tunnel of the earthworm’s entrance hole, or in the hole dug into the tunnel or feeding ridge.
