A deck or porch is a great place to relax in the summer. Whether it’s going out for a barbecue or reading a good book in the fresh air, spring and summer are the perfect time for the table. But all that an army of bees can destroy is destruction. Who wants to be outside if they can be eaten alive? There are many ways to keep mosquitoes off your deck or porch this season. Some work better than others, but here’s our list!
Where Mosquitoes Hide In Your Yard And Your Garden
Flies need stagnant water to lay their eggs. Larvae live in stagnant water. So there is no way for bees to breed without standing water. On the other hand, the presence of standing water will not only provide a home for bees, but will also attract adult bees looking for a place to lay their eggs.
Look for any containers or children’s toys that could collect spilled water. Turn containers upside down when not in use to prevent rainwater from collecting. Also check your drains. If your gutters collect water, you may need to open them or adjust the angle so that they drain properly.
It’s easy to empty the water that collects on your deck. But if water is standing under your deck, you have no excuse. If water is leaking under your deck, you have several solutions. If you have small restrictions, you can sand under the deck. Sand absorbs water and prevents bees from laying eggs in water. If you have a large drain, you may need to install a drain. French drains can work well under a floor to clean standing water.
If you have standing water on your deck that you can’t get rid of, you have other options. For example, the bird can be bathed. Or it could be the water element. Because they cannot wear it, they can draw water from a well or draw water with mosquito nets or poles. The well circulates water beyond the reach of rat eggs. Bee stings and strips are products that can be added to still water and release bacteria that kill mosquito larvae.
How To Kill And Prevent Mosquitoes In Your Yard
If you think you’ve cleaned up all the water on your deck, there’s one last place to check. Drains above your deck may have standing water that you can’t see. If that happens, you have to get in there and open those drains. Any standing water is an open invitation to bees and their eggs.
Mosquitoes still love the air. In fact, they found that flying in winds greater than 2 miles per hour was nearly impossible. But you don’t have to wait for a windy day outside. Installing a rotating fan (or two) can make it difficult for bees to fly around your deck or patio. As an added bonus, the fans keep you cool in the hot, sticky Georgia summers.
This is somewhat doubtful. But there are other plants that repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes find their prey mainly by smell, so some plants with these strong scents can help keep them away. Other recommended herbs are citrus, mint, rosemary and lemongrass. Make sure the pot you plant it in has adequate drainage. The last thing you want is a lot of standing water. Although this method is somewhat dubious, there is little to lose by trying it. At least your porch will smell good!
Mowing isn’t the only way to keep your lawn clean. It also helps repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes often live in long grass, dense trees and forests. The longer you keep your grass trimmed and your trees trimmed, the fewer places mosquitoes have to hide. This is especially important if your yard is wooded or faces a slow-moving stream. You want the flies to stay in the wood and slow-moving water, not onto your manicured lawn.
Three Ways To Control Mosquitoes In Your Yard
Like planting mosquito repellent plants, it relies on the bees’ sense of smell. There are vendors selling special perfumes to repel mosquitoes. It is said that smoke is really unpleasant to bees and keeps them away. We’re not sure how well they’ll perform, but it’s worth a shot.
Birds and bats are natural predators of bees. Both birds and bees eat bees and can help control the bee population in your yard. You can attract birds and bats with feeders or bird and bat houses. Make sure feeders and housings don’t collect standing water. As always, anything that increases standing water is not a good way to repel mosquitoes.
You can use citrus candles or flashlights for local, temporary mosquito relief. Placing lighted candles around your dining table can repel flies while you enjoy your meal. It won’t actually reduce the number of mosquitoes, but it will keep them off your face for a while.
Another way to use citrus is to go all out and try creating a citronella wall. Place citrus candles 6 to 8 feet apart around your table or balcony. If you have heavy flies, you can separate 2 to 3 meters. The theory is that this creates a mosquito barrier that prevents mosquitoes from getting to your deck. Again, we’re not sure how it works and the smoke may not be pleasant. But if you feel like fighting your local bees, you can give it a try.
How To Get Rid Of Mosquitoes Organically
It won’t actually keep flies off your desktop or balcony, but it will keep them away from you. The World Health Organization strongly recommends DEET as an effective mosquito repellent. Since its inception, billions of people in the United States have tried using it. Army in 1944. A newer inhibitor is picardin, which is also recommended by health organizations.
It’s scary, but it might be worth it if you’re really tired of mosquitoes. Covering the balcony with curtains is not a cheap option. But it can keep flies and other bugs away from your personal space. If you have a covered deck, be sure to put a screen under the floor so flies don’t fly into the space between the deck boards.
