Home Decorating Ideas On A Low Budget

Home Decorating Ideas On A Low Budget – Hey, you will. So this renovation I’ve been going through finally came home. I have been painting and installing trim and doors for about 6 weeks now and think I can finish this time next week. I will share the full details of what I did soon. but in the meantime, I wanted to take a minute to recap some of the best budgeting ideas I’ve come up with over the past 2 years before I start renovating.

But like anything, I’ve gotten better over time. And one of the most common questions I get from readers is about decorating, and especially how to do it on a budget.

So I narrowed the list down to my top 50, and even threw in a few projects and ideas that have never been blogged before, just for fun. Consider this one big final rush and a friendly little wave to my 1970s home as it was before the renovation.

I mean, it will always be a 1970s house…it has a giant stone figure built into the middle. But you know what I mean…we’re making progress.

1. I get asked all the time how to reduce clutter. And one way is to use trays to organize small spaces. For example, this week I found a small silver tray at a thrift store for $1 and made a small coffee station where I can store sugar, spoons, etc. It’s not rocket science, but it works and it’s beautiful.

2. Using old discoveries in unconventional ways. I found this vintage champagne bucket for under $10 and used it as a planter. I also saw them keeping wooden utensils on the kitchen counter.

3. Do you have off-center lights that drive you crazy? Well, I have several in this house, and instead of paying an electrician to move the whole thing, I chained it with a hook attached to the ceiling. You can find custom made hooks in the lighting section of your hardware store.

Update: For those of you who have been waiting for me to finally finish the dining room (after only 8 long months), here it is. I’m sorry for being such a slug.

Many of you are doing this project, using silver prints or making a source… I love it when you take something I’ve made and make it better!

7. Buy some art at a thrift store and give it a makeover by spray painting the frame, painting the rug white, and adding some glitter.

8. Find a cheap desk and use it as an office desk. I found this table for $50, painted it black and added a polyurethane top. It has served as my blogging headquarters since day one.

I just put the office together this week and it looks so different. Different layout, new paint, new carpet, new lighting, different wall art. Basically, the only thing that has remained the same is the desk. I will show you soon.

9. Make your own hat. Because those things can be expensive. I made mine out of pieces of plywood, upholstery foam, fabric (used as upholstery material) and silver nail trim. All in all, I think it cost me less than $50.

10. Look for cheap furniture and paint a bold colour. Painted furniture isn’t for everyone, but if you’re on a budget, you can do a lot with some cheap furniture and a little paint. Whether you’re dealing with handmade materials, a thrift store, or something you literally picked up off the curb, paint can do wonders.

I know we’ve talked about this dresser 5,000 times, but it’s such an icon that it’s literally calling its name.

11. Upholster an old piano bench and turn it into a cushioned footstool for your bed.

I used the striped fabric, cushion stuffing and nail decorations and then painted the legs silver.

12. Instead of stuffing all my jewelry in a bag somewhere (because of course…), I have a bunch of cute little bowls that I’ve collected over the years (which I usually buy for $1 or more in the process. excited! ), and I keep my jewelry in them. Vern’s top shelf is devoted to jewelry…all stored in a small container.

I used to be the type to jump over her jewelry, but then I welcomed Cheese and Tootie into my life and that quickly went away.

13. This is similar to #12, but we will deal with it. I also use small vases to hold makeup on the table.

Today a plant came to live on my vanity. I try to keep the plants from getting killed by giving them some sun. And water. I forgot to water it most of the time.

14. And that brings us to vanity. I know you love Verne, but the silver leaf vanity is my personal favorite. I sit here every day (because it takes a long time to get out of the rat’s nest) and even though it’s a project that almost killed me, it’s one of the few things I’ve make me totally and completely in love. with. with. Also, it was originally a $15 dark brown thrift store desk. So that helps.

15. So, I have a pillow obsession, and up until a few years ago I used to spend way too much money on pillows.

When you can’t afford a new sofa or a whole home remodel, a $20 pillow gives you hope. I’m not saying it’s healthy, I’m just being honest.

But those things add up, and before you know it, you’ve got a cupboard full of cushions you don’t even use, and you wish you’d just saved your money and bought that new sofa instead.

So these days I save my money and make my own pillows. And the best part is, you don’t need to know how to sew…you can just use fabric glue!

16. We’ve already said too much about pillows, so we’ll cut this short. You can also make your own pillows using basic white fabric and then trace your pattern with a Sharpie.

17. Upholstering thrift store chairs is a great way to save money and I’ve probably saved over 10 since starting this blog. This green and white chair was one of my favorite versions, mainly because of how great it looked when I got it. All that was needed was a meter of fabric and some paint for the legs.

You know how long I’ve been looking for this one and the disaster that happened when I tried to strip and paint it. But I’m still so happy with how it turned out in the end.

Also, let’s be honest, the living room looked like the situation below, so I appreciate little things like a decent sized TV stand.

19. Mix the metallic. I used to be so bad about this, but slowly I’ve managed to be decent. And our house looks a lot better now that I’ve improved my metal mixing skills a bit.

I’ve been using a lot of chrome and satin nickel lately, and sometimes I add oil rubbed bronze (like the cabinet hardware) and gold (like the mirror tray I’m painting).

I still save a lot and it’s usually one of the first places I check when I’m looking for something specific. It takes a lot of effort and you have to train yourself to see what’s there. But once you get used to it, you can find some really amazing stuff, and for a lot less than you would pay elsewhere. Over the last 4 years, probably 50-70% of the things in our house have come from thrift stores. the shop

My rule of thumb is to buy new when it matters: sofas, rugs and bedding. And then the rest, try to save. If you’ve never read one of my thrift store posts, these two ( here and here ) will get you started.

21. Our house had such an old fashioned cupboard when we first moved in. Since we definitely couldn’t replace it, I decided to use what I already had and paint it. I painted our kitchen cabinets and upstairs bathrooms and it made more of an impact on our house than almost anything else I’ve done.

Since the original tutorial, many of you have asked me how I paint the inside of the cabinet. And all I did was use it
