Diy Laundry Room Makeover On A Budget

Diy Laundry Room Makeover On A Budget – If you’ve been following me on Instagram for a while, this picture is probably familiar to you! A while back, I shared my laundry room makeover in my stories, long before I had Stay Home Style. Since then, many people have asked me about this project, and a neighbor even paid me and my husband to remodel her laundry room, so I thought it was time to share and make this fun little DIY. It deserves credit. . All the details are right here with you!

This was the first of our many “quarantine DIY projects” and actually our first big DIY project for the new house. When building our house, I knew I wanted to do something fun in our laundry room, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. Luckily I thought ahead and asked our builder not to install the ugly wire shelves that are standard in most laundry rooms. This left us with an empty wall, storage space and an unattractive laundry room…which was the perfect starting point for a great DIY project! In this post, I’ll give you all the details about this super affordable and easy DIY!

Budget Laundry Room Makeover

Before going into the details, let me start by saying that this DIY is super easy and can definitely be done in a weekend. Our walls are about 6′ wide, our ceilings are 9′ high, and it took me less than two hours to paint it from start to finish. While I was painting, John was able to cut and paint the wood, so the next day we got to install the cabinets and put our washer and dryer back in!

The first step to any good DIY project is planning and preparation! Decide what you want to paint for this project, measure your wall and gather your supplies!

I wish I had taken more pictures of the process, but like I said before, Stay at Home Style didn’t cross my mind even then! Luckily I found this photo above some of my planning process. I made some rough pictures from several different patterns and these were my top three! I chose design #3 for two reasons….

After deciding on a pattern and practicing on paper… I immediately followed it and started painting!

My painting method is hard to put into words. Basically I started with one shot and tried changing the size and placement of my strokes until it covered the entire wall! The key to achieving this look is to make sure you vary the strokes but keep everything consistent. I tried to separate short, medium and large strokes (in terms of length) while keeping the thickness roughly the same.

I painted it Friday night, then when it was done I let it dry overnight. If you need to remove existing shelving or paint your walls a different color, you’ll want to include this in your project timeline. We painted our existing wall color (Silverpoint by Sherwin Williams) for us and didn’t have to remove the existing shelves!

While I was painting, John cut and painted the wood for the cabinets backstage. Unfortunately I don’t have any photos to share but it was a very simple process! We measured our wall and cut boards to fit wall to wall above our washer and dryer. We decided to go with just two shelves, but you can do as many as you want! Our neighbor who hired us for his laundry decided to build two shelves side by side instead of two shelves on top of each other like we did ⬇️

Once you’ve measured, cut, and painted your boards to your liking, it’s time to install the shelves! As I mentioned before, the shelf supports we use can be up to 200 lbs per shelf. Double, so we decided to use two for each. the shelf If you need more support or have a long shelf, you can use three brackets instead. Our top shelf is usually decorations or things we don’t use regularly, but the bottom shelf is for detergent, sprays and wash, dryer sheets, etc.

First you will determine your height. I wanted our bottom shelf to be as low as possible, which puts it right above the wall outlet. This rack is completely handy and does not affect the opening of our top-loading washing machine. From there, we chose a height that felt about 26″ left and right between the shelves. There really wasn’t a particular reason for this distance, I just thought it looked good 🤷‍♀️ if you want some direction I wasn’t aware. When doing this project, the center of the space between your shelves will be your standard 57″-60″ shelf arrangement. In short, the ideal height for hanging wall art is 57″-60″ on center, so the same Rules may apply. Apply here!

When you reach your height, you’ll want to keep your brackets level with the wall, and if that means landing straight up… consider yourself lucky! We were lucky on the one hand, but on the other hand we had to use plaster dowels. Either way, make sure your cabinets are properly supported. Wood itself is heavy anyway, so add in, among other things, large containers of detergent, and you’ve got yourself a hefty load!

You want to make sure your brackets are flush with the wall and level with each other, so when you first attach the brackets to the wall, I recommend placing the board on top and making sure Make sure the shelf is level before screwing in the brackets. the shelf Holes in drywall are much easier to fill and repair than holes in wood!

Installing the sports is probably the hardest part and is much easier with two people. My rule is always measure twice, cut/drill/nail/screw once. If you take your time and plan ahead, you won’t have any problems here!

After assembling your shelves, put your washer and dryer back in place and you’re ready to organize and decorate! As fun and beautiful as these cabinets are, they are very functional! They give you plenty of space to store essentials, along with plenty of space for decorating and entertaining. We store our detergent, sprays and wash and delicates bags in the left basket and our drying linens in the smaller basket on the right. They are easy to access and the baskets keep everything organized and stored. TBH, the other items on the shelves are more for decorative purposes than anything else, but if you need more storage you can add more baskets, jars or storage containers!

Our laundry room is relatively small, but the vertical pattern elongates the room, making it feel longer and larger. Shelves add functional storage that doubles as a space to add decorative touches that make laundry a little more fun.

Most of the things I used on my shelves were stuff I already had all over the house. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it, so I tried to use what we already had. Some of these products came from TJ Maxx, Ross, Dirt Cheap, etc., so I can’t give you links to the exact products… but I did find some options for similar products on Amazon. The bottom is up to you!
