Over the years, I’ve collected a few tips, tricks, and secrets that make decorating on a budget easy and fun as I decorate everything from my room at my parents’ house to the dorm and the apartment.
Small Apartment Decor: 5 Tips To Make The Most Of Your Space
I hope this allows you to take a breath and realize that yes, your space can look great without breaking the bank. It’s possible, I promise!
One of the most important (and my favorite) steps is to create a vision board – this is very important because, like anything in life, you don’t want to be blindsided and then end up crashing.
I like to start with a look to see what colors I’m feeling, what styles speak to me, etc. I see clearly. If you’re stuck and don’t know which way to go, create a vision board. Even if you think the inspiration photos you’re using aren’t appropriate, you’ll eventually find they are (99% of the time).
Everyone has their own style of creating a vision board. Personally, I like to do mine on Pinterest. These are the simplest things I find and usually bring all the inspiration I want and more.

After I created my Pinterest vision board, copied and pasted the images into a Google Doc, printed, cut, pasted onto the board and voila, the vision board is done. Plus, making visual boards is so therapeutic and motivating (can you tell I love it?).
As I said before, there are many ways to make a vision board. The best way for you might be to cut a photo out of a magazine, use Instagram, or put it back on Tumblr (they have really cool photos).
If you don’t want to have to crop your images, you can still create a visual board on Pinterest, just don’t print it! You can still get a good idea of the style you want.
Oh my gosh, this tip is so important. If you really have less space, stick to light colors!! I promise you can go with gloomy dark colors when you get the mansion, but light colors will make your entire room feel 10 times bigger than it is.
Things You May Not Be Aware Of When Decorating Your Small Apartment
And the paint is cheap!! This is something you can do in a weekend that will transform your space. Dark colors absorb all the light of the room, especially if it is small. This doesn’t mean you can only use white if you like blue, there are some really nice light blues that will look amazing. Try to keep it as light as possible when it comes to walls and large objects (furniture, paintings, etc.) and adapt it to your taste.
Apartments are very small and you don’t want to accidentally create a very tight space – this is great advice when you’re on a budget because I tell you not to buy more than you need. Less is more. Again, less is more.
Too many details can do more harm than good. It’s better for a simple and minimalist apartment, and I promise you, it doesn’t look plain when it’s all put together! You are trying to put a puzzle together and if each piece is too complex, you will be overwhelmed.
Curtain!! Seriously, they do the job. When I want a little spice and feel a little more luxurious, I like to add curtains to my space. If you really want to feel put together add more curtains lol. They will make your room look and feel 10 times more expensive.

Luckily frugality is culturally acceptable (just kidding lol what a “trend” and it’s never stopped me so far). Thrifting is great because you can find unique pieces that will make your space truly unique. Also, the prices are amazing for the most part.
If you’re thrifty you need to put on your creativity hat, most fabrics are amazing but may require a quick DIY. But I promise you, at the end of the day, you’ll be very thankful for the savings!
Don’t buy it if you don’t have to. no ifs, ands, buts. If you’re on a budget, stick to the essentials and over time you’ll find the perfect pieces for your space.

In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded with new content and things to buy all the time. We can feel so overwhelmed that the only way to release these feelings seems to be to fill the void. However, this will only make you feel more claustrophobic and overwhelmed. Like I said before, less is more!
Follow the last point, but try to leave room for growth. You don’t need to leave more than one amount. Your style will evolve with you, so leave some wiggle room in your space so you two can grow together!
If you want your space to look bigger on a budget, add a mirror. Seriously, they do the job. You won’t believe the difference they make. I strongly recommend it!
