Decorating A Small Bedroom On A Budget – Decorating hacks to make a small space look bigger with quick, budget-friendly projects and decorating resources for a designer for less.
Over the years, we’ve learned a thing or two about small bedroom ideas. The rooms in our house are by no means large.
Decorating A Small Bedroom On A Budget
Our own master bedroom and oddly shaped guest bedroom were a real challenge to get right due to size constraints.
Small Bedroom Ideas You’ll Love
After Robert’s friend from high school moved to a new house this summer, we decided to give him and his wife (Richard and Ashlee) a gift and decorate their small master bedroom.
See the difference! It has become much better than what it was before! (To be fair, the photo is better too, but you get the point.)
The best part is that we managed to do this on a budget using decor and paint from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart.
This made me think of all possible ideas for a small room to make it look bigger than it actually was.

If you have the same situation, hopefully they will help you. (You can see how to make small rooms look bigger in the rest of the house.)
Go big and vertical with art! Hanging gallery-style art to the top of the wall will naturally draw your eye up to the ceiling to make the room appear larger. Or choose a large piece of art to create the illusion of a larger room.
I paired this gallery wall with mismatched gold wall frames, wooden wall frames and vintage prints for a more collected look. The featured art next to the bed is an old hanging piece we used to have in our dining room. It looked perfect here.
Choose very light or very dark colors on the walls. Generally, the best choice is the paint color at the top of the paint swatch strip or at the bottom of the paint swatch strip. Avoid neutral tones as they create the appearance of a smaller room.

Contrary to popular belief, very dark colors on the walls of a room can create the illusion of more space. Bonus: dark colors in bedrooms can even improve sleep! (I haven’t slept better since we painted the bedroom wall black.)
To open up the tight space between the bed and the dresser, I painted the old dresser with Better Homes & Gardens paint in Summer Fog.
A little black adds contrast and depth, so we painted the existing bed with Better Homes & Gardens Obsidian paint. It went so smoothly! Not a single brush stroke to be seen!
A simple change that has had a big impact in creating the illusion of a larger room is to lower the mattress. You can do this by replacing your traditional box spring with a 3″ low profile box spring. If the bed is high in a small room, it can crowd the room.

Place a rug under the bed to define the space. In the case of this room, the rug helped soften the room and add some pattern for interest.
Go high and wide with curtain panels. Make sure you buy curtains that are long enough to just “kiss” the floor. I like to hang the curtains just 2-3″ below the crown and extend about 12″ from each side of the window frame so that the entire window is visible when the curtains are opened.
It creates the illusion of bigger windows, higher ceilings and lets in more light! I love the texture of these curtains.
Plain white bedding is your best friend in making a room clean, bright and inviting. I love the textured pattern on this chenille comforter set and I added a little more texture with these gray fringed pillows and super soft blanket.
Tips For Decorating Your Bedroom On A Budget
Use a mirror to reflect the light in the room, especially on the walls opposite the window. You will never go wrong with a classic round mirror on a wooden cabinet.
Candles and lamps make the cave-like space cozier. I spray these ceramic table lamps with antique copper paint to add some warmth and ambiance. Some candles are poured into the room to make the room more intimate.
A few plants can go a long way to liven up a small space. So I included a few, including this pothos, in this pretty white planter. In the vases I painted, I used some simple eucalyptus stems to add life to the drawers as well.
I have a poor record of keeping houseplants alive, but over the years I have managed to discover that the best houseplants…
Decorating A Small Bedroom On An Even Smaller Budget
Remove clutter as much as possible so that you have drop areas to keep things out of sight. I used a tray on top of the dresser, some small trinket cups on the apron and put these drawer spaces.
That’s it! This room really came together SO well and I think we accomplished it in record time!

How To Make Your Bedroom Look Expensive
You may be tempted to spend more time and effort decorating a room that your guests will see, but neglecting your room is a bad idea. After all, you spend almost a third of your life in your bedroom, so it is important that it is comfortable, quiet and welcoming. An unfinished room can seem drab and transient, but just because you need to personalize your space doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to do so.
Whether you already have the space and just need a small mirror to complete the look, or you’re starting from scratch, we spoke to an expert designer to get tips on budget-friendly ways to decorate your room.
Stephanie Beverly is the principal interior designer and lead artist at Twelve15 Design Studio based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
No, we’re not talking about Amazon (although we love a good Prime deal). Search your home for things you no longer use and move them to the bedroom, suggests Beverly.

“Buy at home,” he says. “People often have stylish and decorative items in their home that can be used in the bedroom.” Sometimes that trendy lamp shade that didn’t quite belong in the living room looks right next to your bed.
Dealing with a small space? “Strategically add a mirror to make the room look bigger and allow you to see more items,” says Beverly. By hanging a mirror behind your bed or on your sink, you can bring in more natural light and fill up the walls without spending a lot of money.
Find used mirrors at thrift stores and flea markets. It is very easy to restore an old mirror with a coat of varnish and some glass cleaner.
Buying art can be expensive and you may not want to splurge on a hand painted piece for your room. Instead, Beverly suggests making your own simple canvas or wall art or photography to fill the bare walls. The easiest way to make a room sterile is not to leave the walls completely blank.

“From your bed to your mattress and bedding, it literally changes your life,” says Beverly. Even if you’re furnishing a room on a budget, try splurging on a comfortable mattress or bedding. the white fin you were looking at.
It’s worth shelling out a few extra bucks for a good night’s sleep. If you can’t afford a full set but rarely use a top sheet, consider buying just a nice sheet.
Beverly suggests upgrading the windows if you want to give your room a more polished look. “Opt for a window treatment that offers great versatility, or offers dimming or light filtering,” he said. “It’s important to pay attention to the lighting in your space and how it affects the look and feel.”
It’s no secret that buying less money costs more. If you’re on a budget, consider a minimalist look. Although it can feel sterile if you don’t do it right, keeping a simple color palette and simple pieces can make your room feel deliberately sparse.
Men’s Bedroom Decor Ideas On A Budget
“Improving the lighting in the bedroom can make the room feel larger,” explains Beverly. “I like different light levels, so consider lamps with different light levels or a light on a dimmer switch.” Consider replacing an overhead light to really change your room. .
